Lesson #5: Bonus Squares

Words with Friends, Scrabble, and word games like Scrabble use a board that has several different types of squares.  Although they maybe referred to as slightly different things, most of them perform the same scoring tasks.  These squares can be easily broken down into two categories: Premium Letter Squares and Premium Word Squares.  These are the 4 different types of bonus squares:

  • Double Letter Score (DL) – doubles the score of the tile placed on it
  • Triple Letter Score (TL) – triples the score of the tile placed on it
  • Double Word Score (DW) – Doubles the score of the entire word when one of its letters is placed on it
  • Triple Word Score (TW) – Triples the score of the entire word when one of its letters is placed on it

Important Notes to Consider:

  • Center Square – You have to use for the first play of the game and it acts as a double word square doubling the score for the first played word
  • Bonus Squares – Only count on the turn in which they are played
  • Blank Tiles – If played on a Premium Letter Square (DL & TL) then they still count for no value; however, if used on a Premium Word Square (DW & TW) then the entire word is still doubled or tripled just like with any other tile

Next game try to use the bonus squares so that your most valuable tiles land on Premium Letter Squares and you try to make words long enough or well-placed enough so letter in the word lands on Premium Word Squares
